About CO Pipelines

Six Reasons To Say No

All Albertans should be aware of these six key risks of CO pipelines, including:

1. Safety Concerns

CO₂ pipelines can leak and explode, causing convulsions, cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, and death for those in the area. Combustion engines can't function around CO₂ leaks, meaning emergency vehicles can't reach people in need.

2. Ignoring Community Concerns

This CCUS project is proceeding without the full consent of local landowners, neighbours, or affected municipalities and is failing to adequately inform landowners of the true risks of this project.

3. Violation of Indigenous Rights

This project is proceeding without the free, prior, and informed consent of affected Indigenous communities, and infringes on Treaty rights to their lands.

4. No Environmental Impact Assessment

CCUS projects including CO₂ pipelines can have a massive environmental footprint – including toxifying groundwater. CCUS is not an effective means of capturing carbon, and this project has not undergone an environmental impact assessment at any level of government.

5. No Plan for Cleanup

The oil and gas industry has a history of failing to properly decommission its infrastructure and rehabilitate the land in a timely manner. Without a funded cleanup plan, landowners will be left with impacts of aging pipelines and storage tanks under their properties forever.

6. Taxpayers Will Pay

The Pathways CCUS project isn’t possible without massive public subsidies from Canadian taxpayers. No more corporate handouts for profitable oil and gas corporations!

Are You in the Kill Zone?

This map shows the major health risks for communities along the project’s suggested route in the event of an explosion, including loss of consciousness, respiratory distress, and even death. We're still learning how many schools, retirement homes, hospitals and homes are in the danger zone. Why should our communities have to pay the ultimate price?

A CO Pipeline Explosion In Mississippi

It looked like you were going through the zombie apocalypse” – Jack Willingham, emergency director for Yazoo County.

CCUS is a relatively new and untried technology in Canada. Many jurisdictions around the world have banned similar projects for their severe safety and environmental risks.

CO₂ pipeline ruptures in the United States have led to mass evacuations, hospitalizations, and chronic health conditions for those affected.

In 2020, the community of Sartaria, Mississippi was absolutely devastated by a CO₂ pipeline rupture. Within minutes of the rupture there were reports of people having seizures, falling unconscious, and experiencing respiratory distress. Ambulances and cars stopped working due to the toxic levels of CO₂, and one local emergency responder said “it looked like you were going through the zombie apocalypse.”
